"A patient, generous film that earns its silences — and a final twenty minutes of the most lucid filmmaking I've seen this year."
Sundance 2025 · United States · Streaming March 28
"Ojumu refuses the cheap catharsis of small-town drama; what remains is a work of almost religious attention to the ordinary."
Tokyo 2025 · Japan · Theatrical
"A debut that treats its characters' silences as load-bearing architecture; you'll leave the theater quieter than you entered."
Streaming · United Kingdom · Now on Mubi
"Smart, brutal, and almost certainly the best British thriller of the year — though the marketing won't tell you that."

Long read · 2,400 words
Rachel Ojumu's Cottonwood, Kansas began as a short story she couldn't sell and a town she'd never been to. Six drafts, two false starts, and one abandoned film later, she delivered the year's most disciplined American debut. Priya Anand reads the film — and the patience behind it.

An editorial note
A Filmxa review is written by a working critic who has, with vanishingly few exceptions, watched the film twice — once cold, once with notes — and who has read the press notes and at least one prior interview with the filmmaker before typing a single sentence. The average review runs 1,800 words. The shortest, of a Sundance short, was 740. The longest, a 3,400-word re-read of a Hou Hsiao-hsien retrospective, took a critic three weeks.
We do not assign star ratings. We do not publish embargoed studio-blessed takes. We do not run reviews lifted from press kits. Our critics are paid for the work; 72% of our revenue comes from reader memberships, not programmatic advertising, which means we answer to readers first. As of January 2026, surveyed subscribers gave our coverage a 4.7 out of 5 trust rating across more than 38,000 responses.
If a film is bad, we will say so. If a film is genuinely great and you should rearrange your week to see it, we will say that too — with evidence, and without hype. That is the only editorial standard we hold ourselves to.
